When water hits the sink basin, it undergoes a phenomenon known as a hydraulic jump, where the flow abruptly slows and thickens. This everyday occurrence mirrors a mysterious process on Venus, as revealed by the Akatsuki probe's images in 2016. These images captured a massive disturbance, a dark smear of denser clouds, sweeping around the planet's equator, leaving scientists perplexed.
Venus, already a peculiar celestial body, boasts super-rotating clouds that circle the planet at astonishing speeds, outpacing the planet's rotation. Nestled within these clouds are three layers, with the lower two remaining largely unexplored. Professor Takeshi Imamura and his team at the University of Tokyo have finally unraveled this enigma using fluid dynamics and atmospheric simulations.
Their research revealed that a Kelvin wave in Venus' lower cloud layer becomes unstable, causing a sudden drop in wind speed and a buildup of atmosphere, akin to the hydraulic jump in a sink. This jolt generates a powerful upward air current, carrying sulphuric acid vapour high into the atmosphere, where it condenses into the observed dark cloud wall. This discovery, the Solar System's largest hydraulic jump, challenges classical fluid dynamics, where large-scale horizontal processes and localized vertical effects rarely interact.
The implications extend beyond Venus. Mars, the team suggests, might exhibit similar phenomena. As space exploration advances, understanding these alien skies becomes crucial. This breakthrough not only sheds light on Venus but also opens new avenues for exploring the diverse atmospheric phenomena across the Solar System, inspiring further research and exploration.
